Abortion Recovery

Post-Abortion Syndrome

Although women who choose abortion may experience immediate relief, some women can have negative emotional and psychological effects within a few months or even years later. This phenomenon is called “post-abortion syndrome" (or PAS).

The most common symptoms of PAS are:

  • Guilt

  • Anger

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Anniversary grief

  • Suicidal thoughts

  • Flashbacks of the abortion

  • Relationship problems

  • Psychological “numbing”

  • Alcohol and drug abuse

  • Sexual dysfunction

  • Difficulty in bonding with children

  • Preoccupation with becoming pregnant again

  • Eating disorders

  • Self-punishing or self-degrading behavior
